Previously, I talked about the importance of being willing to learn, that they’re constantly improving, and they’re humble enough to accept feedback.
What to Look for in a Sales Candidate: Look for someone who is purpose driven
My second trait that I would look for is someone who is purpose driven. The the sales profession requires an enormous amount of initiative. You have to have a very strong belief in what you’re doing, and that it’s for a bigger purpose. Otherwise, the lack of conviction is going to come through, and their effectiveness is going to be severely limited.
Furthermore, if they have no personal ambition, if they’re not trying to go for something, then the amount of effort they’re going to put in and their willingness to step outside their comfort zone is going to be very limited. So being purpose driven, is really important.
What to Look for in a Sales Candidate: Look for selflessness
And as qualifier, I would keep an eye on what purpose they’re looking for. If they’re only self-interested, that’s a big red flag to me. If they’re only talking about, you know, the goals that they want to achieve… The car they want to buy, the house they want to buy. The commission’s they want to earn… That’s not really a good purpose to have. It’s not very powerful.
If on the other hand, they start using language such as “They want to add value to your company or make a real difference in the clients.” Those are really good indicators that they are purpose driven, and they’re going to be motivated by their beliefs.
What to Look for in a Sales Candidate: Conclusion
So that’s what I think, that’s my second important trait that I would look for in ideal sales candidates.
